Medical students’ attitudes toward collaboration between doctors and nurses – a comparison between two Swedish universitiesSammanfattning av projektet
Aims – The aim was to study attitudes towards collaboration between doctors and nurses among medical students in two medical schools, one with a curriculum containing an elaborated interprofessional training programme. The question was whether differences in attitude are to be found between male and female students and between those with previous working experience in medical care and those without?
Method – A questionnaire, Jefferson Scale of Attitudes toward Physician-Nurse Collaboration, was provided 314 first years and final year students at Gothenburg University (GU), and at Linköping University (LiU); at the latter an interprofessional training programme is in practice.
Results – 258 (82%) answers were received. There was no significant difference in attitudes toward collaboration, either between first and final year students at GU and LiU. Nor was there any significant difference in attitude among those who have had earlier experience of working in health care. There was a significant difference between male and female students (p=1,7%,) implying a more positive attitude among female students. Final year students at both universities showed a significantly more negative attitude towards collaboration, than did first year students (p=2,1%).
Conclusion – Attitudes towards collaboration between doctors and nurses showed no difference among medical students in two medical schools, one with an elaborated interprofessional training programme. Female students displayed a more positive attitude towards collaboration than male and final year students were more negative than first year students. The impact of interprofessional teaching and training programme is discussed.
