Physical activity, cognition and brain stem cells: from cellular mechanisms to function

Sammanfattning av projektet

Fysisk aktivitet har positiva effekter på hjärnans funktion. Det finns såväl kliniska som experimentella bevis för detta, men de bakomliggande molekylära mekanismerna är ännu till stor del höljda i dunkel.
Projektets syfte är att med hjälp av fysisk aktivitet påverka demensutvecklingen hos patienter med milda kognitiva svårigheter. Epidemiologiska studier och interventionsstudier kommer att användas för att undersöka samband mellan kardiovaskulärt status och demens. De kliniska studierna kommer att kompletteras med experimentella sjukdomsmodeller för studier av neuronal komplexitet, påverkan på gliaceller, vaskulära förändringar samt aktivering av stamceller. Vi fokuserar särskilt på att identifiera vilka förändringar i hjärnan som kan åstadkommas genom regelbunden fysisk aktivitet och vilka de bakomliggande mekanismerna är. Det övergripande målet är att kunna behandla neurodegenerativa sjukdomar genom specifik stimulering av mekanismer som stimulerar reparationsmekanismer i hjärnan.
