The professional self-description form (PSDF)

To measure DNs and GPs perception of their professional personality, the Professional Self-Description Form (PSDF) could be used. Originally this analytic instrument was produced for the study of creative performance among scientists and engineers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The instrument was tested and analysed by Dagenais and Meleis and adapted as a test for nurses. It has also been translated, adapted, and validated for Swedish conditions. The Swedish version contains 21 questions, instead of the 19 contained in the original version.

Mätmetodens utformning, utförande och utvärdering

For each item in the PSDF the respondent is asked to rate him or herself in comparison to other DNs or GPs using a seven-point Likert type scale, ranging from 1 to 7. The scale is labelled: definitely less than most others in my profession; somewhat less than…; about the same…; somewhat more than…; far more than…; considerable far more than…; and to a degree rarely equalled…

A comparison could be performed by using the Mann-Whitney non-parametric statistical test to study differences between independent groups.

The PSDF assumes that self-image influences personal performance, acquisition of the professional role and future achievement. Because the PSDF scale is complex and includes several items, factor analysis is recommended for describing the studied group as an isolated variable cannot provide the complete picture.
